The Aleutians East Borough Selects Sharon Boyette to Serve as New Borough Administrator

November 4, 2008

Anchorage, AK – Nov. 4, 2008 – Aleutians East Borough (AEB) Mayor Stanley Mack is pleased to announce the Borough has appointed Sharon Boyette as the new Borough Administrator, effective January 1, 2009. Boyette will be promoted from her current position as the Borough’s Community Development Director, a job she has held for 17 years. Among her many accomplishments as Community Development Director, Ms. Boyette has been instrumental in shepherding the development of harbors and other infrastructure projects within the AEB communities.

“Sharon is the ideal candidate to fill this key position,” said AEB Mayor Mack. “Her extensive knowledge of the needs of our rural communities combine with the high quality of her work to make her the obvious choice. We are fortunate to have someone of her caliber taking the reins.”

Ms. Boyette will take the helm after current Borough Administrator Bob Juettner retires at the end of December, 2008.

“I am thrilled to move from swing dog to lead dog on Mayor Mack’s team,” said Ms. Boyette. “With 17 years under my belt, I’m familiar with the issues the Borough faces. As administrator, it will be exciting and challenging to be at the forefront of several changes we see on the horizon. One major opportunity is the possibility of gas and oil exploration in the North Aleutian Basin. Ensuring that protections are in place for our commercial fishermen as we move into other industries is a top priority. Diversifying our economy so current and future generations can remain in their communities is another key objective.”

“I have worked closely with Sharon for nearly two decades and have been continually impressed with her dedication and commitment to the highest standards,” current Borough Administrator Bob Juettner said. “She is uniquely qualified for this position, and I’m confident the Borough will be in excellent hands under Sharon’s administration.”

Prior to working for the Aleutians East Borough, Boyette was a teacher and coordinated state and federal programs for the Lower Kuskokwim School District from 1975 to 1990. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida and a Master’s degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

The Aleutians East Borough is the municipal government encompassing the westernmost portion of the Alaska Peninsula and a number of Aleutian Islands. It extends 300 miles along the eastern side of the Alaska Peninsula and consists of the communities of Sand Point, Cold Bay, King Cove, False Pass, Akutan and Nelson Lagoon. The communities are dependent on subsistence and commercial fishing.
