Sand Point, AK
Sand Point is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The City of Sand Point is located on the northwest portion of Popof Island, in the Shumagin Island group that lies south of the Alaska Peninsula. Almost half the inhabitants are of Unangan descent, mainly from the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe. The community is home to one of the largest commercial fishing vessels in the Aleutian region.
King Cove, AK
King Cove is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The City of King Cove is located on the south side of the Alaska Peninsula. The predominantly Aleut fishing community is situated in a narrow valley overshadowed by rugged mountains.
False Pass, AK
False Pass is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The City of False Pass is located on the eastern shore of Unimak Island facing Isanotski Straight to the western tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The shallow waters and the narrowness of the channel caused the village and straight to be called False Pass.
Akutan, AK
Akutan is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The City of Akutan is located on volcanic Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians. The mostly Aleut community is 35 miles east of Unalaska and 766 air miles southwest of Anchorage.
Cold Bay, AK
Cold Bay is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The City of Cold Bay is located at the western edge of the Alaska Peninsula. The City serves as the regional hub for air transportation on the Alaska Peninsula. It has a paved state-owned 10,415-foot-long paved and lighted runway and a 5,125-foot-long paved crosswind runway built during World War II.
Nelson Lagoon
Nelson Lagoon is one of six communities in the Aleutians East Borough. The Native Village of Nelson Lagoon is located on the northern coast of the Alaska Peninsula and sits on a narrow sand spit that separates the lagoon from the Bering Sea. The community is the only Unangan settlement on the Bering Sea Shore.

Applications are open for Upstart Alpha, a virtual startup accelerator hosted by SWAMC and the Center for Economic Development at UAA from October through December.
The program is open to nine businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs residing in the Aleutian Region or resident shareholders in Southwest Alaska.
Complete at least 10 of the 11 sessions to be eligible for a stipend. Plus, two participants will receive a travel sponsorship to attend the 2027 Alaska Entrepreneurship Week in Anchorage.
